Orange-Violet Cocktail
3 parts Gin
1 part Crème de Violette
1 part Grand Marnier
Sparkling Wine
Orange Peel (optional)
Sparkling Wine
Orange Peel (optional)
Shake gin, Crème de Violette, and Grand Marnier with ice. Strain into a tall chimney glass full of ice. Top with a splash of sparkling wine, and garnish with an orange peel.

How long has it taken you to build this reservoir of liquor and liqueurs? I feel like I could be out an entire paycheck if I stocked up to make your delicious cocktails! Suggestions for staples to have around the house?
ReplyDeleteYou make an excellent point. It would indeed be quite pricey to try to go from zero to fully-stocked bar overnight. I would guess that it has taken us a good 5 years to stock up to this point (with obvious refreshes along the way). I say find a good base liquor or two that you like (e.g. Ketel One Vodka or Hendrick's Gin), and then start to add in liqueurs over time. Liqueurs (for the most part) don't expire, and you use such a small amount in drinks that they last forever. My favorites are St. Germain (elderflower); and Domain de Canton (ginger); Cointreau, Triple Sec, or Grand Marnier (all variations of orange). From there, it's just mixers and fruit and maybe adding in some new liqueurs that come along. I stay away from most juices as mixers and usually just use fruits and club soda or experiment with Italian sodas.
DeleteDo you find that yours last longer, too, because you're making so many new cocktails so often that you're not revisiting some of the flavors/bottles as frequently?
ReplyDeleteI'm sure that helps. If we're spreading our usage over more bottles, each bottle lasts longer. It also doesn't hurt that I drink maybe one cocktail a week at home.
